This whole candle making thing is new to me. Until now I used cooking as my stress reliever. That certainly didn't help the size of my tummy so I sought out a different outlet. After watching the movie "My Idiot Brother" I was inspired by the ending. The two guys started up a candle making business. The one guy asked the other if his candle was ugly (it looked like a carrot gone wrong) and the other guy said "There is no such thing as an ugly candle". THAT was my inspiration!
I decided I would try making candles. Luckily my hubby is very supportive. I got a block of paraffin, some kitchen string, popsicle sticks, and an apple juice can. The kids and I sat under the tree on the front lawn and started dipping. Those were not the prettiest candles I've seen but we had so much fun. The kids were proud of themselves and we now had a centerpiece for the dining room table.
I began researching wax and candle making. I was intrigued by the benefits of beeswax, so we ordered a couple blocks of pure beeswax and a bunch of candle making supplies. Hubby converted one of our sheds into a little workshop and I was on my way.
Surprisingly, I did a great job! The tapers were beautiful. I thought, if they look this good now, how will they look after a bit of practice? And besides, they are home made so they don't have to look perfect.
I got the bug, and started purchasing and producing more and more. I came up with a "look" and got a stamp made for labels.
My first test was taking a few samples to a local artisans' consignment shop. I had to leave the samples for the artists to vote on to see if they would allow me to sell in their store. They all voted in favour! Success!
After a lot more work I just presented to a second store this past weekend and now have a display there.
The days are getting colder and the shed is no longer an optimal temperature. Hubby is in the basement creating a new workshop for me. Warmer and much bigger.
Time is of the essence. Christmas is around the corner and I'd like to get some more stores on board. So off to the shed I go!!!
